For over 45 years, I have been deeply fascinated by the art of creating images on hand-formed paper. Paper, my primary medium, serves both as a substrate and a sculptural material. I work exclusively with my own handmade paper to draw, paint, and collage. In addition, I craft bas-relief and three-dimensional sculptures, each one meticulously created to meet museum conservation standards.
The images in my work emerge from an intuitive, inside-out process, as if the fibers themselves are guiding the outcome. This approach reflects my deep exploration of the history and traditions of papermaking, which continuously inform my artistic journey. My work draws inspiration from my nearly 40 years of living in Hana, Hawaii, where I designed my own home and art studio. The landscapes, myths, and stories of other places I’ve visited—such as Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Indonesia, and North and Central America—also weave into my creations.
I exclusively use 100% pH-neutral cotton and other natural fibers, allowing the paper pulp to undergo multiple transformations. Through processes such as vacuum-forming and embossing, it evolves into bas-relief or freestanding sculptures. I then apply grounds made from natural pigments—such as lapis lazuli, colored clay gessos, and lotus root—to the surfaces of my works.
Having received classical training, I take great joy in connecting traditional art techniques with contemporary practices. The medium of paper offers endless possibilities for experimentation, allowing me to create truly unique works of art. Whether it’s watercolor, oil painting, collage, or sculpture, each piece is a one-of-a-kind expression.
Studio visits are available by appointment.
